Alcoholism and drug addiction is a family disease. Often family members suffer more than the addict as they live in the reality of the addiction while the addict is caught up in their cycle of use, numbing them to reality. As a family member, it can be difficult to help the addict. You can become frustrated and exhausted. As the addict continues in their addiction, family member’s behaviors change to accommodate the pain and chaos the addiction causes. The family becomes immersed in the addiction and it can be difficult to see a way out. Family members may get into a cycle of enabling the addict when in fact, they think they are helping.
